HVAC Maintenance: Spring

With warmer weather on the horizon, it’s important to make sure that your HVAC system is prepared to keep your home cool and comfortable during the coming months. Although it’s imperative to have a contractor professionally assess the unit, there are steps that all homeowners should take to ensure its condition, too. Here’s what you need to know.

How to Prepare Your HVAC System for Spring

1. Clean the Outside Unit

The outdoor AC unit contains many of the air conditioner’s most important elements, like the compressor, the condensing coil, and the fan. You should clean it thoroughly to prevent buildup that might compromise operation when it comes time to turn it on.

First, turn off the unit’s power, then use a wet/dry vacuum or a brush to gently remove debris. Address the ground around the unit as well. Rake leaves, clear brush, and make sure there’s at least two to three feet of clearance space. This allows contractors to perform air conditioner repairs as needed and helps keep it cleaner throughout the season.

2. Check for Air Leaks

Air leaks throughout the home force the HVAC system to work much harder than necessary to meet and maintain the temperature set on the thermostat. This overuse can eventually lead major components to fail prematurely, or at the very least require you to schedule unexpected repairs in the middle of the season.

Protect the system’s longevity by sealing all gaps around doors and windows throughout the home. That will help stabilize indoor temperatures and reduce your dependency on the AC, too, which will contribute to lower energy costs overall.

3. Change the Air Filter

A clean air filter is vital to a healthy unit. When the filter is clogged, it can’t effectively trap dust, dander, and other contaminants that might otherwise circulate throughout your home and affect the quality of your indoor air. Moreover, it means the system has to work overtime to keep the home cool, which can drive up your costs and spell long-term trouble for the appliance’s longevity. Make a habit of replacing it every three months, or more often if you have pets.
